Training and Education
The School of Public Policy and Administration, in collaboration with the Centre for Voluntary Sector Research and Development (CVSRD), offers intensive, graduate level programming on governance and management issues facing non-profit and voluntary sector organizations in Canada and internationally. The first seminar, Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Governance and Management, was offered in July 2007 with over 60 participants. Given the huge demand for the course, CVSRD expects that such a format will be offered again.

Non-Profit and Voluntary Sector Governance and Management
PADM 5109
Overview
This course will explore key issues facing non-profit and voluntary organizations and will examine their evolving relationships with governments in Canada and globally. Its objectives are to:
- develop a deeper understanding of the voluntary and non-profit sector in the context of contemporary governance; and
- critically assess the kinds of public policies and management practices that would enable the sector to be stronger and more effective.
It will examine the scope, size, structure, legal framework, and the capacity of the sector to participate in public policy dialogue. The course will offer a combination of theory and practical tools related to governance, leadership, networks, partnerships, volunteer resources, communications, public relations, financing, and social innovation. Instructors are university faculty members, community leaders, and senior managers from non-profit and voluntary organizations who will draw on the diverse experiences of participants. Although the primary focus is on the voluntary sector in Canada, extensive comparative analysis and international experience will be incorporated into the material. Students are encouraged to draw upon their own experience in working or volunteering in this sector or in government working in partnership with this sector.
